Geneva, 25 April 2013 – On the fourth Thursday of April each year, ITU and the global technology community laud ‘Girls in ICT Day.’ It has turned into an event created to pay salute the female contribution to the technology industry. It promotes tech careers to a new generation of women with special interest in mathematics and science.
Since its 2010 commencement, it has been expanding its scope all over the world, covering over 1,300 events planned in 90 countries (2012), and even more activities set to be held in over 100 countries from 21 time zones.
During this annual meeting, ITU is celebrating the event at home and abroad. The events have been organized in Geneva and Brussels, having the European Commission’s DG Connect as a partner, and the personal support of EC Vice-President NeelieKroes.
“Despite some progress, only 21 of the Fortune 500 companies are run by women. There are only 16 women ICT Ministers out of ITU’s 193 Member State governments, and only 10 of the world’s 160 independent ICT regulatory authorities are headed by a woman. In a world where over 95% of all jobs now have a digital component, and where there is a large and growing skills shortage in the ICT sector, we need to get more girls involved in science, technology, engineering and maths, and we need to get more girls taking an interest in ICT careers,” he told MEPs.
